Lord Mayor Cllr Deirdre Forde yesterday launched the Seandún GAA’s Mac Curtain and MacSwiney Cup commemorative medals, with many of the City Division clubs attending the night in the Council Chambers.
Cork City Council are proudly supporting this event as part of their Decade of Centenaries commemorations, with the Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr. Deirdre Forde launching the MacCurtain and MacSwiney Cup competitions on the 103rd anniversary of the death of former Lord Mayor Tomás MacCurtain at the hands of Crown Forces.
We have run the Mac Curtain (hurling) and MacSwiney (football) cup competitions at Junior A level in Cork City since 1953/54, honouring the two martyred Lords Mayor, who were both passionate supporters of Irish language and culture. As the 2020 Decade of Commemorations was not run in 2020 due to COVID-19, we are now running the competitions this year which is funded under the 2020 Cork City Commemorations Fund and supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport & Media. Winners of both competitions will be awarded a special commemorative medal, along with the MacSwiney and MacCurtain Cups.
Thank you to all clubs who were present on the night.
